Beyond the Classroom Tutoring- How we
got started
My name is Cathy Thompson
and I am the founder and owner of Beyond the
Classroom in-home tutoring. I began tutoring
just over 20 years ago, doing one-on-one
sessions with students in their homes. I
noticed huge improvements in my students’
grades and confidence. Through word of
mouth, I was tutoring numerous students
while working full time at another job and
so I began to hire tutors with the same
enthusiasm for tutoring that I had since I
couldn’t keep up with the demand. Over time,
more and more tutors have sought out
positions at Beyond the Classroom because of
the philosophy of the company and because
they believe that one on one tutoring is the
most effective way to increase grades and
confidence.
I have earned a degree in Psychology and
Sociology from McMaster University along
with a post-graduate diploma in Continuing
and Adult Education from the University of
Saskatchewan. I also have diplomas in
Addictions Studies from McMaster University
and Bookkeeping from Mohawk College. I am a
lifelong learner. I also have two small
children, one in elementary school. I can
definitely relate to parents when they tell
me it’s a challenge to do homework with
their own children!
Beyond the Classroom has been helping
students since 1997 in the Burlington and
Oakville areas of Ontario. We are also
excited about expansion to Milton Ontario in
the Fall of 2009! We employ over 25
passionate and experienced tutors, many of
whom have worked with us for years.
At Beyond the Classroom, we offer flexible
scheduling, payments and let you and your
child guide the tutoring process. We offer
tutoring beginning in JK to Grade 12 in most
subject areas including Math, Language Arts,
English, Science and the Social Sciences.

Beyond the Classroom Tutors
We strive to select the
best tutors living and working in South
Western Ontario. Our tutors are not only
experienced but are passionate about
tutoring and making learning fun. They each
possess a minimum of one university degree
and have their criminal record checks
completed. Many are recent graduates of
teachers college or currently teaching in
the public, Catholic or private school
systems. Tutors regularly check in with both
parents and with the owner of Beyond the
Classroom to ensure goals are being met and
any issues are resolved immediately.
